In his early days he was an engraver and draughtsman, and made many drawings for the "Illustrated London News" but his best known illustrations were those done for Longfellow's "Evangeline". He also supplied drawings for some of Milton's works, as well as Goldsmith's poems. Most of his pictures are water colours, showing Surrey cottages, rustic scenes and landscapes. This picture is a water colour, and was bequeathed to the Tate Gallery in 1905.Publisher: Photochrom Co. Ltd
