It shows monks obtaining the compulsory fare for the next day, hence its title. The sequel picture is "Friday" in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool. The artist was born at Dorking in 1854. John Brett, born in 1830, was in early life much under the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite School, and in his famous picture, Vald Aossta, he endeavoured to express the ideals of this school in landscape work. Ruskin greatly praised some of his work, which was mostly seascapes and rugged coast scenes, chiefly of Cornwall. This picture was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1880, and purchased by the Chantrey Bequest. Brett died in 1902. Published by Photochrom

Napier Hemy was born in Newcastle in 1841. He was the son of a distinguished musician, and studied painting in England and Belgium and other places on the Continent. Shortly after his return to England he allied himself to the Newlyn School, and since that time most of his pictures have been Cornish subjects, his most famous picture being Pilchards, which is now in Tate Gallery, having been purchased out of the Chantrey Bequest Funds. A Nautical Argument is only 38 in. by 24 in. and was purchased by the Walker Art Gallery. Published by The Photochrom
