Obelisks, Monuments. / The Tomb of Washington at Mt. Vernon. Va. is a plain brick structure overgrown with ivy. On a slab over its arched gateway is inscribed : Within this inclosure rest the remains of Gen. Geo. Washington. It is a spot sacred to all Americans, a shrine visited annually by thousands. It is the custom for the officers and crew of all vessels to stand at attention, and for the ship's bell to be tolled in passing Mt. Vernon, on the Potomac, out of reverence for the last resting place of Washington. Its preservation is due to The Mt.
