Ephesus was an ancient Greek city on the coast of Ionia, Turkey. It was built in the 10th century BC on the site of the former Arzawan capital by Attic and Ionian Greek colonists. During the Classical Greek era it was one of the 12 cities of the Ionian League. The city flourished after it came under the control of the Roman Republic in 129 BC.
Background: Izmir (Turkish spelling İzmir, contraction of its former name Smyrna, Σμυρνη in Greek), the second-largest port (after İstanbul) and the third most populous city of Turkey is located on the Aegean Sea near the Gulf of Izmir. It is the capital of the Izmir Province.
