| | Item 226976 India Old Postcard Bailey Guard Gate, Lucknow, Ruin Ruins, Gate Gates No. 515 Vintage British Indian Old Postcard, India, The Bailey Guard Gate, Lucknow.
Through this gate the road leads into the Residency at Lucknow, which sustained a memorable siege (11th June - 17th November 1857). Many sad scenes were here enacted of which we now think thankfully and proudly. The names of Sir Henry Lawrence and other brave men will never be forgotten. In front of the Bailey Guard is a memorial to the faithful native soldiers who shared the defence with the British: - Fought with the bravest among us, and drove them, and smote them and slew, That ever upon the topmost roof our banner in India blew.
