Japan Old Hand Tinted Postcard Shirahata Temple Grave of Yoritomo Gate 白旗神社 賴朝公墓Vintage Japanese Old Multiview Hand Tinted Colour Postcard. Japan. Shirahata Temple Shrine. Grave of Minamoto Yoritomo. Entrance Gate. 白旗神社 賴朝公廟 賴朝公墓.Background: It is said that Shirahata Shrine was built to honor a legendary warrior named Yoshitsune (1159-1189) as the guardian god of the village a long time ago. The villagers buried Yoshitsune's head in the grave at the shrine as an expression of deep sympathy for the warrior, who died a tragic death. The Grave of Minamoto Yoritomo tower stands where there had been a sanctuary called Jibutsudo, which was called Hokkedo after Yoritomo died. The tower was reportedly rebuilt in 1779 by Shimazu Shigehide, and is designated a national historic site. When the combination of Shintoism and Buddhism was eliminated in the Meiji era, the Hokkedo sanctuary was replaced by the Shirahata Shrine, which is dedicated to Minamoto Yoritomo.
