A lascar was a sailor or militiaman from the Indian Subcontinent or other countries east of the Cape of Good Hope, employed on European ships from the 16th century until the middle of the 20th century.

Background: M. V. Dhurandhar, Mahadev Vishwanath Dhurandhar (1867–1944) was a noted Indian painter and postcard artist. He was a popular painter during British rule in India. His illustrations of women in their daily life are especially popular.
