This extraordinary and mysterious statue of a creature half-lion, half-woman, is known to have existed in the time of Cheops, about 3700 B.C., and is perhaps older still. It was raised in honour of the god Harmachis, the Rising Sun, but modern Egyptians call it Abu-Hor, Father of Terror. The huge image is hewn out of the living rock, the body is about 150 feet long, the face 14 feet wide, and the height from base to head, about 70 feet. Mutilated as it has been, it is still wonderful, and its secret is a secret still.
