Itō Jakuchū (伊藤 若冲, 1716 – 1800) was a Japanese painter of the mid-Edo period when Japan had closed its doors to the outside world.

Background: Bodhidharma (c. early 5th century CE) was the Buddhist monk traditionally credited as the transmitter of Zen to China. He was believed to be a South Indian Pallava prince-turned-monk who journeyed to Southern China and subsequently relocated northwards. Bodhidharma was primarily active in the lands of the Northern Wèi Dynasty (386–534).
