When taking shelter in cleft of the Rock during a Storm, composed the famous Hymn. Rock of Ages. Sent from Weston-s-Mare to Herefordshire. QEII 1d x 3 Burrington Combe is a gorge on the north side of the Mendip hills, in Somerset, England. "Combe" or "coombe" is a West Country word meaning a steep-sided valley. The gorge contains the entrances to many caves, and Augustus Montague Toplady was inspired to write the poem Rock of Ages while sheltering under a rock in the combe during a thunderstorm in the late 18th century.
