LONDON TOWER BRIDGE Opening on THAMES 1912 Old Postcard
Vintage B/W Postcard of the Thames River Tower Bridge open / opening for Ships & Boats. The foundation-stone was laid by His late Majesty King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, in 1886. the centre span consists of 2 bascules, which are raised to allow the passage of large steamers, as seen in the picture. The Tower Bridge is the most famous bascule bridge in the world. It was opened on June 30, 1894, having cost about £1,000,000 sterling to build. The whole process of opening the bascules, allowing a ship to pass and bringing them down again takes only 5 minutes.
