The foundation-stone was laid by His late Majesty King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, in 1886. the centre span consists of 2 bascules, which are raised to allow the passage of large steamers, as seen in the picture. Sent from Harrow to France. King George 5th 1/2d Green The Tower Bridge is the most famous bascule bridge in the world. It was opened on June 30, 1894, having cost about £1,000,000 sterling to build.
