 | Item 82372 Chapel of St. Nicholas Great Tower Footing Old Postcard Wiltshire Vintage Postcard. Salisbury. Chapel of St. Nicholas in Great Tower Footing. Of the beginning of old Sarum nothing appears to be known, the outer earth work is apparently pre-Roman and may be of the early Iron Age. Portions of Roman tiles, pottery and painted wall-plaster discovered during the excavations are proof of Roman occupation. Old Sarum is the site of the earliest settlement of Salisbury, in England. The site contains evidence of human habitation as early as 3000 BC. Old Sarum is mentioned in some of the earliest records in the country. It sits on a hill about 2 miles north of Salisbury.
