The University was founded in 1740 by Benjamin Franklin as a charitable school. At the conclusion of the Revolution a new charter was given by the State and the present title was assumed in 1791. In 1875, the university was moved to the present extensive grounds west of the Schuylkill River, where some 30 buildings have been erected and are constantly increased.

P.A. / The largest suspension bridge under construction in the world (at the time), connecting Philadelphia, Pa. and Camden, N. J. with a single span 1750 ft, long, center to center of Main Piers, with a clearance above high water of 135 ft. over a width of 800 ft. in center of span. The main structure is to be of a 2 cable suspension type, carrying a roadway for 6 lines for rapid transit, and 2 ten-foot sidewalks above the roadway. The estimated cost to be about $29,000,000, and to be completed in 1926 in time for the Sesqui-Centennial to be heldin Philadelphia during that year. Published by 279/41842
