 | Item 70230 ENDEAVOUR Schooner Sailing Boat - New Zealand 1967 Card Early Colour Shipping card. Ships That Have Served New Zealand No. 4 of Series of 12 cards. Published 1967 by Sanitarium Health Food Co. Auckland. ENDEAVOUR. The Endeavour was original a three-masted collier named Earl of Pembroke, built by Whitby, Yorkshire, in 1764. Later renamed Endeavour and commanded by Captain James Cook from 1768-1771. Her complement was 94 men. Cook sailed from England to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus and then came to New Zealand. He sighted New Zealand about half way up the East Coast and later charted the whole of the coastline, his charts being amazingly accurate. The Endeavour was 106ft. in length and had a tonnage of 368 tons. In March, 1775, she was sold out of the Navy for GBP 645, and there is nothing definite about her fate after this.
