One of the six LORD FARINGDON class of 4-cylinder 4-6-0's, this engine was photographed at Neasden shed in 1930. A sister engine was re-built with two cylinders, and another experiment was the fitting of Caprotti valve gear. These engines, class T19, were originally built as a class of 110 rather ungainly 2-4-0's, whose appearance was later improved when converted to 4-4-0's by the fitting of a leading bogie, while superheating gave them a better performance. These useful little engines - of which three hundred were built - were by no means confined to coal haulage, but were used for all types of short-distacnce freight and passenger trains, especially in hilly districts.
