Harding Norwood. 1902. / Chiddingstone, a beautiful little village embowered in trees, situated about 6 miles north-west of Tunbridge Wells, on the Eden, a tributary of the Medway. It is supposed to derive its name from a fantastic mass of sandstone rock, shaped like a pulpit or chiding stone, situated in the Castle park behind the Inn. Sent from Tunbridge Wells Kent to Ontario Canada. Chiddingstone village is a parish within the district of Sevenoaks. It lies on the River Eden, downstream of Edenbridge. The village takes its name from a large sandstone rock formation, situated on its outskirts, named the chiding stone. Tradition asserts that the stone was used as a seat of judgement, mainly to remonstrate overbearing local wives.
