 | Item 46856 JERSEY 1907 Tucks OILETTE Postcard Mount Orgueil Castle Channel Islands Vintage Old Tuck's Artist Drawn Art Colour Postcard. Jersey, Mount Orgueil Castle. The Castle stands on a projecting headland of rock that separates Grouville Bay from St. Anne's Bay. The highest part of the Castle is 310 feet above the sea, and is ascended from the pier by 244 steps, mixed up with pieces of steep road. It was commenced in the 10th Century by the Dukes of Normandy, and was continued by the Kings of England. Queen Victoria visited the Castle on September 3, 1846. Vane Hill, Rock Walk, in some parts almost buried in foliage, isin the foreground, the Harbour, with its pleasure boats, in the middle distance, and the Continental-looking Vane Hill, studded with villas embowered in trees and shrubs, forms a commanding background. One of the most beautiful views of the town. The water in the foreground is skirted by the Torbay Road, which winds gracefully from the station to the town, great cliffs rise almost abruptly from this road, richly clad with verdure, and surmounted by lordly villas, the conical-looking hills stand out in clear relief, and the whole scene reminds the traveller of the beauties of the Bay of Naples.
