Ossian's Cave is situated some little way down the rugged and romantic pass of Glencoe. Ossian was the great Gaelic poet, a somewhat legendary personage, the son of one Fionn Mac Cumhail who is supposed to have lived during the Third Century. The Highlands teem with stories and legends concerning Fingal, Fionn, Ossian and such like mythical characters. Sent from Kilmarnock to Leicestershire. In 1691 King William offered bribes as well as threats to secure the pacification of the Highlands, and finally issued a proclamation fixing December 31st as the last day for formal submission by the various Clans. All save the MacDonalds of Glencoe yielded quickly, but the latter in their pride delayed their inevitable surrender until it was legally a few days too late... etc. etc. Glencoe village is the main settlement in Glen Coe.
