Birds, Pigeons. / The Charterhouse (French Chartreuse) was formerly a Carthusian monastery founded by Sir Walter Manny in 1371. It was dissolved by Henry VIII., and after various vicissitudes was bought in 1611 by Thomas Sutton to place there his hospital for 80 poor men and 40 poor boys. Originally, the house belonged the see of Grenoble, and Saint Hugh gave it to Saint Bruno and his followers in 1084. With that house, Bruno founded the Carthusian Order.
