John Russell R.A. (1745-1806) was born in Guildford, Surrey. A pupil of Francis Cotes, R.A., he had set up his own studio by 1767 and became the leading pastellist of his day. He exhibited a total of 330 works at the Royal Academy between 1769 and 1805, and was appointed Crayon Painter to the Prince of Wales in 1785. In 1772 he published Elements of Painting in Crayon in which he described his technique of "sweetening", or subtle, harmonious colour blending. Many of his portraits were of children, and many were copied by prominent engravers. Also a Medici print, size 16 x 12 1/8 in.
