Tarbet is the place for steamboat passengers on Loch Lomond to disembark for Arrochar and the head of Loch Long. The dividing isthmus is very narrow, only 1 1/2 miles, and from the fact the village derives its name, "tairbeart" meaning "a place across which boats can be drawn".
