Vintage Colour Old Tuck's Oilette Postcard. 1908. Devon, Cattle Cow. Berry Pomeroy Castle. This Castle, built about 1056, stands on a commanding height, about 9 miles from Torquay, and dominates the landscape with its beautiful ruins. The Castle was struck by lightning in 1685, and finally abandoned to decay. It has a ghost or two of great antiquity. Berry Pomeroy Castle is a late medieval castle, located halfway up a wooded hillside, looking over deep ravine and stream and situated in Berry Pomeroy, near Totnes, Devon, England.

It consists of four granite piers, on which rest granite slabs 6 feet wide and 15 feet long, the whole being put together without mortar. A fine gateway leads to the beautiful garden in which the Mausoleum of the Emperor Akbar (1556-1605 A.D.) is situated. He died in Agra, a city that was for a time named after him - Akbarabad. The Mausoleum is a pyramidal building of 4 storeys, three of red sandstone and the fourth of white marble. A gentle incline leads down to the dark vaulted chamber where the great Akbar reposes and exactly above in the centre of the beautiful top storey is the white marble cenotaph of the Emperor. In the court round the central enclosure is the Hall of 1,000 pillars, granite monoliths 18 feet high. Some represent men on horses spearing tigers.
