Repeated bloody fights between the army and Sioux, Cheyenne and Arapahoe Indians led to the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868 which established the Great Sioux Reservation for the absolute and undisturbed use and occupation of the Indians.
In 1874 Custer was ordered to the Black Hills to find a location for a military post. With the troops were scientists and practical miners who discovered gold on the Sioux Reservation.
The miners refused to leave, so the Government tried to buy the land from the Indians. Many Indians left the reservation to join those who had not accepted the treaty. They were ordered back, and warned that the army would compel them if necessary.
The Army sent General Crook to uphold the treaty by expelling the gold seekers.
News of the discovery started a gold rush to the Black Hills.
