The uniformed attendants at the Stock Exchange are called "Waiters" - an echo from the 17th and 18th century coffee houses in which the stockbrokers of those days met and did business. Today the "Waiters", among other duties, transmit messages and call Members to the telephone, using illuminated number boards like the one illustrated. There are eleven such stands on the "floor of the House".
