Staffordshire Old Postcard - LICHFIELD CATHEDRAL & Arms

Vintage Colour Postcard. Lichfield Cathedral and coat of arms. One of the noblest religous edifices in the Kingdom. Founded in 667, it was enlarged and improved in later years. The graceful centre steeple has a height of 258 feet, and the whole building, extending 411 feet in length, has a breadth of 67 feet. The beautiful west circular window was constructed in the reign of Charles II. at the expense of James, Duke of York. Lichfield is a small city in Staffordshire, 110 miles northwest of London and 14 miles north of Birmingham. Famous for its three-spired Cathedral, Lichfield lies in pleasant country, on a small stream draining eastward to the Trent, with low hills to the east and south. It is the main town in the Lichfield district. The population of the district according to the 2001 census is 93,237; of the city itself 27,900.
