A pagoda (a Portuguese corruption of the Persian but-Kadah, Idol Temple) is originally an Indian temple. Pagodas very in height, being as much as 13 stories and sometimes having walls 13 feet thick. Some of the pagodas in Japan, which are amongst the finest edifices in the country, are very seldom open to strangers.
