J.M.W. Turner R.A. Rain Steam and Speed Bridge Viaduct National Gallery PostcardLarger Art Artist Drawn Colour Picture Post Card. Bridge, Boat, Viaduct. Rain, Steam and Speed. Oil on Canvas 35 3/4 x 38 in. By courtesy of the National Gallery, London. J.M.W. Turner R.A. (1775-1851), the son of a barber, was one of the greatest English landscape painters. He entered the R.A. Schools at the age of 14 and was elected R.A. in 1802. In 1819 he made the first of several visits to Italy - he particularly loved to paint in Venice. His later works, in which the brilliant, hazy light seems almost to dissolve the shapes, had a considerable influence on 20th-century painting, especially French Impressionism. A large exhibition of his works was held at the Royal Academy in 1974. This painting depicts the Great Western Railway - one of the great achievements of Victorian engineering.Publisher: The Medici Society Ltd London Item sold.
