On 24 November 1906 the 7pm North Eastern Railway express from York to Leeds crashed into the rear of a stationary coal train at a speed of around 40 mph, causing the engine, tender and leading two carriages of the passenger train to derail. The driver and fireman of the express were killed instantly and the guard and seven passengers suffered minor injuries. The accident is thought to have occurred due to the driver and fireman missing a stop signal in thick fog.
