The Rosetta Stone (3ft. 4in. x 2ft. 8in). Inscribed in Egyptian hieroglyphic and demotic characters and in Greek with a decree of honour of Ptolemy V. Epiphanes, voted by the priests of Egypt assembled at Memphis. It was discovered in 1799 at Rashid in the Delta, and from it was obtained the clue to the decipher-ment of ancient Egyptian writing. / The Rosetta Stone. A basalt slab on which is cut in hieroglyphics, demotic and Greek characters, a decree in honour of Ptolemy V Epiphanes, which was drawn up by the priesthood of Egypt assembled at Memphis B.C. 197-6. It was dug up at Rosetta in 1798. From this monument the values of several letters of the Egyptian alphabet were duduced, and a clue to the true decipherment of Egyptian hieroglyphics first obtained.
