On 29 January 1910 the Brighton to London express split in 2 when passing points at the station and the rear part of the train, consisting of two third-class carriages and a Pullman, derailed and crashed into the platform at 40 mph. 7 people were killed and 8 seriously injured. The US Consul General, Robert Wynne, was travelling in the Pullman but was unhurt. The subsequent enquiry determined that one wheel of a carriage had become detached from its axle. The station was renamed a year later.

July 3rd 06. / In the Salisbury rail crash of 1 July 1906, a LSWR boat train from Plymouth's Friary railway station to London Waterloo station failed to navigate a very sharp curve at the eastern end of Salisbury railway station. The curve had a speed limit of 30 mph, but the express had been travelling at more than 70 mph. The train was completely derailed, and smashed into a milk train and a light engine, killing 28 people. Railway disaster, Ulleskelf, Yorkshire, 1906. On 24 November 1906 the 7pm North Eastern Railway express from York to Leeds crashed into the rear of a stationary coal train at a speed of around 40 mph, causing the engine, tender and leading two carriages of the passenger train to derail. The driver and fireman of the express were killed instantly and the guard and seven passengers suffered minor injuries. The accident is thought to have occurred due to the driver and fireman missing a stop signal in thick fog.
