Background: Shanhai Pass, (Shanhaiguan, 山海关, 山海關 Shan-hai-kwan, Shan-hai-kuan, also called Yu Pass, 榆关, 榆關), is one of the major passes in the Great Wall of China. The words "First Pass Under Heaven" (天下第一关, 天下第一關) are engraved above one of the gates, and so the site is also known by that name. It is located in Shanhaiguan District, Qinhuangdao, Hebei province.
