The Boxer activity began in Shandong province in March 1898, in response to German occupation of the Jiao Zhou / Kiao-Tschau region. The Eight-Nation Alliance 八國聯軍, an alliance of 8 nations (Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) put down the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. At the end, the China imperial government was forced to sign the unequal Boxer Protocol of 1901.
