Private John Moyse was a British soldier of the 3rd (East Kent) Regiment who according to popular legend was captured by Chinese soldiers during the Second Opium War and later was executed for refusing to prostrate himself before the Chinese general.Publisher: Designed and Printed with authority by Geo. Falkner & Sons. 181 Queen Victoria Street, London Background: The Boxer Movement or Boxer Rebellion was a Chinese uprising against foreign influence in areas such as trade, politics, religion and technology that occurred in China during Qing Dynasty. The Boxer activity began in Shandong province in March 1898, in response to German occupation of the Jiao Zhou / Kiao-Tschau region. The Eight-Nation Alliance 八國聯軍, an alliance of 8 nations (Austria-Hungary, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States) put down the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1900. At the end, the China imperial government was forced to sign the unequal Boxer Protocol of 1901.
