China 1926 Cavanders Old Cigarette Card Ancient Chinese wearing Cangue Execution

Vintage Old Small Cigarette Card. 3.5cm x 6.7cm. 1926. Cavanders Ltd London Established 1775. China. Ancient Chinese. No. 12. Ethnic Life. Chinaman. Chinese Criminal. Execution. Cangue. In certain processions in China, men wearing the cangue appear. They also have their hands thrust into leathern or wooden cuffs. To these cuffs is often attached a brass chain which passes over the neck. On the cangue are slips of paper from the temple where they have had certain vows recorded, relating to benefits received. The cangue is worn as a token of gratitude for these benefits.

Background: A cangue is a device used for public humiliation and corporal punishment in China and other parts of Asia. It was similar to the stocks used in the West, except that the board of the cangue was not fixed to a base, and had to be carried around by the prisoner.
