Foreign Devil. This cry invariably greets the daring European who attempts to explore the lower quarters of Chinese towns. The natives hate the foreigners and it is only necessary to refuse their invitation to purchase some useless article, to provoke a storm of vituperation and abuse. The epithet "Foreign Devil" is derived from the fact of wearing no pigtail, by means of which the Chinese hope to be dragged into Heaven!.
