York Gate House, York Gate and White's Wharf in 1789. The shipbuilding yards of the famous shipwrights George Culmer and John White, were in being well before 1495. It was Richard Culmer who established the shipbuilding industry and his son George who, in 1538, built Harbour Street and the Pier, and in 1540 York Gate to defend them.
