Balmoral Castle. The Highland home of His Majesty the King and the favourite residence of Queen Victoria is on the River Dee, 9 miles form Ballater. It was built in 1848 on the site of a much smaller mansion, and, standing 926 feet above sea level, commands grand views of the surrounding country.
