 | Item 1312 Fountains Hall Yorkshire Old Postcard Haunted Building Early Great Britain 1900s Coloured Picture Postcard. Fountains Hall (Yorkshire West Riding), Elizabethan and Jacobean (for James I, who reigned 1603-25), was built by Stephen Proctor between 1598 and 1604, partly with stone from the Abbey ruins. It was built for peace and prosperity, influenced by the Elizabethan architect Robert Smythson. Legends including a hiding place for Catholics during the Civil War, and being haunted by the Blue Lady. The Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and Queen Elizabeth) often stayed there as guests of the Vyner family.
