Background: On 5 July 1884 Dr. Gustav Nachtigal, German Imperial Commissioner, persuaded the King of Togo to place his country under German Protection. By 1899, all the boundaries were agreed. Postal agencies were opened in Klein-Popo on 1st March 1888 and in Lome on 1 March 1890. In the First World War French troops from Dahomey and British troops from the Gold Coast invaded Togo early in August 1914 and the German forces surrendered on 27 August 1914.
