Background: The first Archbishop of Canterbury was St Augustine who arrived on the coast of Kent as a missionary to England in 597 AD. He came from Rome, sent by Pope Gregory the Great. The Archbishops of Canterbury were usually extremely powerful and often they were counsellors to kings. Canterbury Cathedral is an extremely beautiful building and it contains one of the most important collections of 12th century stained glass in the world.
