Background: The steam ship S.S. General von Steuben was a German luxury passenger ship. Formerly named the München, renamed in 1930 as the General von Steuben, after the famous German officer of the American Revolutionary War. In WW2 1944, she was an armed transport ship, taking German troops to Eastern Baltic ports, and returning to Kiel with wounded. She was sunk in 1945, more than 3,000 people died.
