Background: Charles II 1630-1685, Ironical wit and English monarch. In youth suffered from Civil War and exile. At 18 became titular King of his father's dominions. Defeated at Worcester in a desperate bid to regain them, escaped in disguise to France. Recalled to England in 1660 by the desire of his subjects. Ruled for 25 years. The last successful exponent of the old English theory of government by "the kknown law of the land" and royal prerogative as opposed to parliamentary sovereignty. - Arthur Bryanr.
