Famed in song and story throughout the world the Royal Canadian Mounted Police symbolize the pround qualities of Canadians everywhere. The public known them best in their bright red tunics, wide-brimmed hats, and erectly mounted in spirited horses. Today the force administraters law and order all across the Arctic in addition to the rural areas of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Monitoba, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. It has jurisdiction anywhere in the Dominion. Inscribed on the regimental colours are records of the Empire's wars in which the Force has taken apart. Honours include the Riel Rebellion in Western Canada in 1885, the South African War at the turn of the century, the Great War of 1914-1918 and the Expedition into Siberia at the end of European conflict. The force was formed in 1873 to provide protection for settlers in the Canadian west.
