Vintage B/W Japanese Picture Postcard. Couple Rock Husband and Wife Rocks. Hide Tide, Rough Sea. 伊勢二見浦怒濤. The Meoto-iwa, or Wedded Rocks, considered to be male and female, are named Izanagi and Izanami and represent the primal couple in Japanese traditional history. According to legend, it is from this couple did all the Japanese islands arise. The rocks are also deemed husband and wife, and, as such, are joined in matrimony by sacred ropes called shimenawa, made from braided rice stalks. The ropes, which weigh almost a tonne.

Vintage Colour Postcard. St. Leonard's. Rough Sea. St Leonards-on-Sea. Although part of the Borough of Hastings, and an ancient parish in its own right, the area that became known as St Leonards-on-Sea was only laid out in the 19th Century in its present form by James Burton as a place of elegant houses designed for the well-off who wished to take the sea air. There are many roads of fine housing, and the design also included parks and gardens. One such is Gensing Gardens, in London Road; another is West St Leonards Gardens, with its handsome portico entrance; a third is Warrior Square Gardens on the sea front.
