Ireland Old Postcard MUCKROSS ABBEY & Sunset Killarney

Vintage Colour Irish Old Postcard. Ruins Muckross (Mukross) Abbey, Ruins, Killarney. County Co. Kerry. It occupies the site of the Old-World Church of Irrelagh. The present abbey was founded in 1340 for Franciscan monks by the MacCarthys, Princess of Desmond. The ruins consist of the remains of the church, the tower, and the dormitory, library, kitchen and other buildings connected with the monastery and are well worth a visit. Muckross Abbey is one of the major ecclesiastical sites found in the Killarney National Park. It was founded in 1448 as a Franciscan Friary for the Observantine Fransiscans by Donal McCarthy Mor. Today the Abbey is largely roofless, although apart from this is generally quite well preserved. Its most striking feature is a central courtyard which contains a huge Yew tree and is surrounded by a vaulted cloister.
