LONDON TOWER BRIDGE Opening on THAMES 1912 Old Postcard

Vintage B/W Postcard of the Thames River Tower Bridge open / opening for Ships & Boats. The foundation-stone was laid by His late Majesty King Edward VII, then Prince of Wales, in 1886. the centre span consists of 2 bascules, which are raised to allow the passage of large steamers, as seen in the picture.

Background: The Tower Bridge is the most famous bascule bridge in the world. It was opened on June 30, 1894, having cost about £1,000,000 sterling to build. The whole process of opening the bascules, allowing a ship to pass and bringing them down again takes only 5 minutes.
