In 1637 the light was an open-fire and was destroyed in 1683. A new tower was built from which the present building dates (1690). It is 185,000 candle-power, visible 20 miles. It is 83 feet high and 188 feet above sea level. It was the North Foreland Radio Station that in 1910 made radio history when it sent the message which led to the capture of Dr. Crippen, the first criminal to be arrested by the means of radio. Ltd. in 1932, undergoing her trials in the Mersey. She is 1,538 tons gross, 290 ft. long 69 ft. broad, 3,000 h.p. and attains a speed of 18 1/2 knots (equal to about 21 miles per hour), oil fired and carries 1,987 passengers. Rochester Castle stands on the east bank of the River Medway, in Rochester, Kent. There has been a castle on his site since Roman Times though it is the Keep of 1127 and the Norman castle for which Rochester is deservedly famous. With the invention of gunpowder other types of defence became more appropriate, and the military centre of the Medway Towns moved to Chatham.
