Series No: 216 Background: Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Columber in 1492. The name is derived from the word XAYMACA, given it by the original Indian tribe, the Arawaks, who were exterminated by the Spaniards, rulers of the island until 1655. The English, under General Venables and Admiral Penn father of William Penn, the founder of Pennsylvania, took it from the Spanish by conquest and Jamaica later became an Independent Nation within the British Commonwealth in 1962.
