Background: In 1865, the inconveniences of the old Red Pier at low tide forced the islanders to open a new pier, the Victoria, which was completed in 1872. It is now 1620 feet long, can accommodate several vessels at all states of the tide, at the shore end is about 712 feet wide, and has been built at a cost of 135,000 pounds.
