Background: This world-renowned mausoleum was built by Emperor Shah Jahan to the memory of his beloved Persian wife. Arjumand Banu Begum who was later known as Mumtaz Mahal (meaning "elect of the palace"). It took 23 years to complete (1630 - 1653). It is a dream of Oriental splendour, fashioned as the last resting place for the "Exalted One of the Palace", the wife of Shahjahan. "If there is a heaven on earth it is this, it is this".
